VONA/KVERT WEEKLY INFORMATION RELEASE 42-2014
Kamchatkan and Northern Kuriles Volcanic Activity

October 16, 2014, 22:58 UTC (October 17, 2014, 10:58 KST)

KVERT monitor 30 active volcanoes of Kamchatka and 6 active volcanoes of Northern Kuriles. Not all of these volcanoes had eruptions in historical time, however they are potentially active and therefore are of concern to aviation.

SUMMARY OF AVIATION COLOR CODES:

KAMCHATKA
Real-time seismic data (from the Kamchatkan Branch of Geophysical Survey RAS: http:www.emsd.ru):
SHEVELUCH, ZHUPANOVSKY: ORANGE
BEZYMIANNY, KARYMSKY: YELLOW

NORTHERN KURILES
Real-time seismic data (from the Kamchatkan Branch of Geophysical Survey RAS: http:www.emsd.ru), ALAID: GREEN

No seismic data:
EBEKO, CHIKURACHKI, TATARINOV, FUSS PEAK, KARPINSKY: GREEN

SHEVELUCH VOLCANO (CAVW #300270)
56.64 N, 161.32 E; Elevation 10768 ft (3283 m), the dome elevation ~8200 ft (2500 m)
Aviation Color Code is ORANGE

Explosive-extrusive-effusive eruption of the volcano continues. Ash explosions up to 32,800 ft (10 km) a.s.l. could occur at any time. Ongoing activity could affect international and low-flying aircraft.

A growth of the lava dome continues (a viscous lava flow effuse on the northern its flank), fumarolic activity and incandescence of the dome blocks and hot avalanches accompanies this process. Satellite data showed a thermal anomaly over the lava dome on October 10-11 and 15, the volcano was obscured by clouds in the other days of week.

ZHUPANOVSKY VOLCANO (CAVW #300120)
53.59 N, 159.15 E; Elevation 9702 ft (2958 m)
Aviation Color Code is ORANGE

Moderate explosive eruption of the volcano continues. Ash explosions up to 32,800 ft (10 km) a.s.l. could occur at any time. Ongoing activity could affect international and low-flying aircraft.

Moderate explosive eruption of the volcano continues. Satellite data showed ash clouds rose up to 29,500 ft (9 km) a.s.l. on October 11, and drifted for about 255 mi (411 km) to the north-east of the volcano on October 11-12. A thermal anomaly over the volcano was noted on October 10-12, the volcano was obscured by clouds in the other days of week.

BEZYMIANNY VOLCANO (CAVW #300250)
55.97 N, 160.6 E; Elevation 9453 ft (2882 m)
Aviation Color Code is YELLOW

Weak activity of the volcano continues. Ongoing activity could affect low-flying aircraft.

A weak seismic activity of the volcano was registering. According to video data, a moderate gas-steam activity of the volcano was observing or it was obscured by clouds last week. Satellite data showed a weak thermal anomaly over the volcano on October 10-11 and 16, it was obscured by clouds in the other days of week.

KARYMSKY VOLCANO (CAVW #300130)
54.05 N, 159.44 E; Elevation 4874 ft (1486 m)
Aviation Color Code is YELLOW

Activity of the volcano continues. Ash explosions up to 19,700 ft (6 km) a.s.l. could occur at any time. Ongoing activity could affect low-flying aircraft.

A moderate seismic activity of the volcano was registering. Satellite data showed: ash plumes drifted about 43 mi (70 km) to the east of the volcano on October 14; ash cloud in 76 mi (123 km) longwise was noted on the distance 77 mi (124.5 km) of the volcano on October 16; a thermal anomaly over the volcano was detected on October 10, 14 and 16; the volcano was obscured by clouds in the other days of week.

In Russia, KVERT, on behalf of the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (IVS) FED RAS, is responsible for providing information on volcanic activity to international air navigation services for the airspace users.

KVERT scientists was available in the office from 8:30 AM till 6:00 PM (KST) 7 days in week and by phone during the evenings since 2005. KVERT analyses daily satellite imagery (since 2002 till now); information from remote scientific observation stations; real-time seismic data for 11 Kamchatkan volcanoes (data from the Kamchatkan Branch of Geophysical Survey RAS); and other information to monitor activity at Kamchatkan and Northern Kuriles Volcanoes.
