STRAIN MULTIRANK ANALYSIS AND A STRUCTURAL PARAGENESIS: THE COMPARISON OF APPROACHES AND RESULTS

The paper describes comparison of methodology and results of application of two approaches. The “quantitative” approach is based on the analysis of strain of natural multirank linear folded structures. The “qualitative” approach is based on an example of the paragenetic analysis of fracture structures. The paper shows accuracy and technique of the first approach for creating of methods and collecting results. The author revealed methodological errors of the second approach (regarding a suggested concept “sodvigs” or “convergent faults”). The quantitative data on a relief of a top of the Paleozoic basement collected at the first accurate approach do not confirm the main statements of some “qualitative” models (including – “convergent faults”) – subhorizontal position of the common detachment on this border on depths of 5-10 km and "rigidity" of the basement within of whole structure of the Greater Caucasus. Necessity of creation of quantitative models for tectonic and geodynamic research is under discussion now.
