Principal hazards include phreatic explosions, ash clouds, ash falls, pyroclastic flows, lava flows and lahars.

Ash falls possible at:
Ozernovskiy (57 km to the west from the volcano)
Pauzhetka (35 km to the west)
Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky (185 km to the northeast)

Zheltovsky is a twinned stratovolcano with a somma and an extrusive dome at the summit.
The lover part of the structure is mainly of lavas, the upper part of alternating lavas and pyroclastics in equal proportions.

The volcano is located in the Southern volcanic belt of Kamchatka, about 16 km northeast of Kurilskoye Lake.
