Atsonupuri volcano is located in the southern part of Iturup Island
Form and structure
The volcano has a structure of the Somme-Vesuvius type. The central cone rises to 1205 m above sea level, or about 300 m above the crest of the somme. Crater of the central cone elongated from southwest to northeast and has the shape of an oval funnel 400 X 500 m in size with a depth of more than 100 m.

Hazard synopsis
Ash clouds, ash falls, hot avalanches and lahars are a potential hazard associated with explosive eruptions of this volcano. The volcano poses a potential hazard to international and local airlines passing in the Kuriles region, since the height of its ash emissions can reach 10-15 km above sea level, ash plumes and clouds can drift hundreds of kilometers from the volcano in different directions. In addition, the outflow of lava flows onto the slopes of the volcano and the surrounding area is possibly.
