Kamchatkan and Northern Kuriles Volcanic Activity
October 20, 2016, 23:40 UTC (October 21, 2016, 11:40 KST)
KVERT monitor 30 active volcanoes of Kamchatka and 6 active volcanoes of Northern Kuriles. Not all of these volcanoes had eruptions in historical time, however they are potentially active and therefore are of concern to aviation.
SUMMARY OF AVIATION COLOR CODES:

SHEVELUCH VOLCANO (CAVW #300270)
56.64 N, 161.32 E; Elevation 10768 ft (3283 m), the dome elevation ~8200 ft (2500 m)
Aviation Color Code is ORANGE
Explosive-extrusive eruption of the volcano continues. Ash explosions up to 32,800 ft (10 km) a.s.l. could occur at any time. Ongoing activity could affect international and low-flying aircraft.
A growth of the lava dome continues (a viscous lava flow reveal in the northern its part), strong fumarole activity, ash explosions up to 7 km a.s.l., hot avalanches and an incandescence of the dome blocks and hot avalanches accompany this process. Satellite data by KVERT showed a thermal anomaly over the lava dome all week. According to video and satellite data, explosions sent ash up to 6-7 km a.s.l. and ash plumes extended for about 210 km to the east, southeast, northwest from the volcano on 14-16, 18 and 20 October.

KLYUCHEVSKOY VOLCANO (CAVW #300260)
56.06 N, 160.64 E; Elevation 15580 ft (4750 m)
Aviation Color Code is ORANGE
Explosive-effusive eruption of the volcano continues. Ash explosions up to 26,240-33,000 ft (8-10 km) a.s.l. could occur at any time. Ongoing activity could affect international and low-flying aircraft.
Explosive-effusive eruption of the volcano continues: there are strong gas-steam activity with emission of different amounts of ash of the summit crater and the cinder cone into Apakhonchich chute, and the effusing of lava flows along the eastern flank of the volcano. According to satellite data by KVERT, a large bright thermal anomaly was observed in the area of the volcano all week; explosions sent ash up to 5-6 km a.s.l. and gas-steam plumes contained ash extended for about 300 km to the east, southeast and northwest from the volcano on 14-14 and 18-19 October.

BEZYMIANNY VOLCANO (CAVW #300250)
55.97 N, 160.6 E; Elevation 9453 ft (2882 m)
Aviation Color Code is YELLOW
A moderate gas-steam activity of the volcano continues. Ongoing activity could affect low-flying aircraft.
A moderate gas-steam activity of the volcano continues. Satellite data by KVERT showed a weak thermal anomaly over the volcano on 14-18 and 20 October; the volcano was obscured by clouds on 19 October.

KARYMSKY VOLCANO (CAVW #300130)
54.05 N, 159.44 E; Elevation 4874 ft (1486 m)
Aviation Color Code is YELLOW
A moderate gas-steam activity of the volcano continues. Ash explosions up to 19,700 ft (6 km) a.s.l. could occur at any time. Ongoing activity could affect low-flying aircraft.
A moderate gas-steam activity of the volcano continues. According to satellite data by KVERT, a weak thermal anomaly over the volcano was noted on 17 October, the volcano was quiet or obscured by clouds in the other days of week.

EBEKO VOLCANO (CAVW #290380)
50.69 N, 156.01 E; Elevation 3792 ft (1156 m)
Aviation Color Code is YELLOW
A moderate gas-steam activity of the volcano continues. Ash explosions up to 16,400 ft (5 km) a.s.l. could occur at any time. Ongoing activity could affect low-flying aircraft and airport of Severo-Kurilsk.
According to the data by observers from Severo-Kurilsk (Paramushir Island, Northern Kuriles), five explosions of gas-steam containing ash occurred at the volcano on 19-20 October. Plumes rose up to 1.5 km a.s.l. and extended for about 15-20 km to the northeast from the volcano. Satellite data by KVERT showed the volcano was covered by dense clouds.
