Kamchatkan and Northern Kuriles Volcanic Activity

KVERT monitor 30 active volcanoes of Kamchatka and 6 active volcanoes of Northern Kuriles. Not all of these volcanoes had eruptions in historical time, however they are potentially active and therefore are of concern to aviation.

SHEVELUCH VOLCANO (CAVW #1000-27-)

Explosive-extrusive-effusive eruption of the volcano continues. Ash explosions up to 23,800 ft (10 km) a.s.l. could occur at any time. Ongoing activity could affect international and low-flying aircraft.

Eruption of the volcano continues. According to visual and satellite data, a viscous lava flow continues to effuse on the northern flank of the lava dome, strong and moderate fumarolic activity and incandescence of the dome summit and hot avalanches accompanies this process. Satellite data showed a thermal anomaly over the lava dome all week. Strong explosive events occurred at the volcano at 19:10 - 20:00 UTC on June 26. According to seismic data, probably ash plumes rose up to 33,000-39,400 (10-12 km) a.s.l. Density clouds obscured the volcano all time. Ash plumes were extending to the south-east and south-west of the volcano. Ashfalls were observed at Klyuchi and Lazo Villages. A thickness of ash at Klyuchi Village was about 2 mm and ash volume - about 533 g/square metre. Two ash explosions occurred at 17:06 and 22:01 UTC on June 27. Ash plumes rose up to 7 and 6 km a.s.l., respectively.

PLOSKY TOLBACHIK VOLCANO (CAVW #1000-24-)
55.83 N, 160.39 E; Elevation 10119 ft (3085 m)

Explosive-effusive eruption of the volcano continues. Ash explosions up to 19,700 ft (6 km) a.s.l. could occur at any time. Activity of the volcano could affect low-flying aircraft.

Effusion of lava flows continues from the Southern fissure at Tolbachinsky Dol. Very fluid lava is moving to the southern, eastern and western slopes of Tolbachinsky Dol. Cinder cones continue to grow on the Southern fissure, a weak gas-steam plumes were observing last week. A thermal anomaly was noting at satellite images in the northern area of Tolbachinsky Dol all week.

KIZIMEN VOLCANO (CAVW #1000-23-)
55.13 N, 160.32 E; Elevation 8151 ft (2485 m)

Extrusive-effusive eruption of the volcano continues. Ash plumes up to 19,700 ft (6 km) a.s.l. could occur at any time. Activity of the volcano could affect low-flying aircraft.

Moderate seismic activity of the volcano continues. Video and satellite data showed a growth of an extrusion at the volcano summit continues. Incandescence of the volcano summit, hot avalanches on the western and eastern volcanic flanks and strong gas-steam activity accompany this process. Satellite data showed a thermal anomaly over the volcano on June 21-23; clouds obscured the volcano in the other days of week.

KARYMSKY VOLCANO (CAVW #1000-13-)

Moderate explosive eruption of the volcano continues. Ash explosions up to 19,700 ft (6 km) a.s.l. could occur at any time. Activity of the volcano could affect low-flying aircraft.

There was not seismic data by technical reasons all week. Satellite data showed the volcano was obscured by clouds all week.

BEZYMIANNY VOLCANO (CAVW #1000-25-)

Strong seismicity at Tolbachinsky Dol obscured seismicity of Bezymianny. According to video and satellite data, clouds obscured the volcano all week.
