KVERT/Volcano Observatory Notification to Aviation

VONA/KVERT WEEKLY INFORMATION RELEASE 44-2014
Kamchatkan and Northern Kuriles Volcanic Activity

October 30, 2014, 23:27 UTC (October 31, 2014, 11:27 KST)

KVERT monitor 30 active volcanoes of Kamchatka and 6 active volcanoes of Northern Kuriles. Not all of these volcanoes had eruptions in historical time, however they are potentially active and therefore are of concern to aviation.

SUMMARY OF AVIATION COLOR CODES:

KAMCHATKA
Real-time seismic data (from the Kamchatkan Branch of Geophysical Survey RAS: http:www.emsd.ru):
SHEVELUCH, ZHUPANOVSKY: ORANGE
BEZYMIANNY, KARYMSKY: YELLOW
USHKOVSKY, KLYUCHEVSKOY, PLOSKY TOLBACHIK, KIZIMEN, KORYAKSKY, AVACHINSKY, GORELY, MUTNOVSKY: GREEN

No seismic data:

SHEVELUCH VOLCANO (CAVW #300270)
56.64 N, 161.32 E; Elevation 10768 ft (3283 m), the dome elevation ~8200 ft (2500 m)
Aviation Color Code is ORANGE

Explosive-extrusive-effusive eruption of the volcano continues. Ash explosions up to 32,800 ft (10 km) a.s.l. could occur at any time. Ongoing activity could affect international and low-flying aircraft.

A growth of the lava dome continues (a viscous lava flow effuse on the northern its flank), fumarolic activity and incandescence of the dome blocks and hot avalanches accompanies this process. Strong explosive events occurred on October 28 and 30: ash plumes rose up to 36,000 ft (11 km) and 23,000-26,200 ft (7-8 km) a.s.l., respectively. Satellite data showed ash plumes and ash clouds drifted more 500 km to the north-east of the volcano on October 28 and 30; a thermal anomaly over the lava dome was noting on October 27 and 29-30, the volcano was obscured by clouds in the other days of week.

ZHUPANOVSKY VOLCANO (CAVW #300120)
53.59 N, 159.15 E; Elevation 9702 ft (2958 m)
Aviation Color Code is ORANGE

Moderate explosive eruption of the volcano probably continues. Ash explosions up to 32,800 ft (10 km) a.s.l. could occur at any time. Ongoing activity could affect international and low-flying aircraft.

Moderate explosive eruption of the volcano probably continues. Satellite data showed the volcano was quiet or obscured by clouds last week.

BEZYMIANNY VOLCANO (CAVW #300250)
55.97 N, 160.6 E; Elevation 9453 ft (2882 m)
Aviation Color Code is YELLOW

Weak activity of the volcano continues. Ongoing activity could affect low-flying aircraft.

A weak seismic activity of the volcano was registering. According to video data, a moderate gas-steam activity of the volcano was observing or it was obscured by clouds last week. Satellite data showed a weak thermal anomaly over the volcano on October 26-27, the volcano was quiet or obscured by clouds in the other days of week.

KARYMSKY VOLCANO (CAVW #300130)
54.05 N, 159.44 E; Elevation 4874 ft (1486 m)
Aviation Color Code is YELLOW

Activity of the volcano continues. Ash explosions up to 19,700 ft (6 km) a.s.l. could occur at any time. Ongoing activity could affect low-flying aircraft.

A moderate seismic activity of the volcano was registering. Satellite data showed the volcano was quiet or obscured by clouds all week.

In Russia, KVERT, on behalf of the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (IVS) FED RAS, is responsible for providing information on volcanic activity to international air navigation services for the airspace users.

KVERT scientists was available in the office from 8:30 AM till 6:00 PM (KST) 7 days in week and by phone during the evenings since 2005. KVERT analyses daily satellite imagery (since 2002 till now); information from remote scientific observation stations; real-time seismic data for 11 Kamchatkan volcanoes (data from the Kamchatkan Branch of Geophysical Survey RAS); and other information to monitor activity at Kamchatkan and Northern Kuriles Volcanoes.
