KVERT/Volcano Observatory Notification to Aviation

VONA/KVERT WEEKLY INFORMATION RELEASE 39-2014
Kamchatkan and Northern Kuriles Volcanic Activity

September 25, 2014, 23:14 UTC (September 26, 2014, 11:14 KST)

KVERT monitor 30 active volcanoes of Kamchatka and 6 active volcanoes of Northern Kuriles. Not all of these volcanoes had eruptions in historical time, however they are potentially active and therefore are of concern to aviation.

SHEVELUCH VOLCANO (CAVW #300270)
56.64 N, 161.32 E; Elevation 10768 ft (3283 m), the dome elevation ~8200 ft (2500 m)
Aviation Color Code is ORANGE

Explosive-extrusive-effusive eruption of the volcano continues. Ash explosions up to 32,800 ft (10 km) a.s.l. could occur at any time. Ongoing activity could affect international and low-flying aircraft.

A growth of the lava dome continues (a viscous lava flow effuse on the northern its flank), fumarolic activity and incandescence of the dome blocks and hot avalanches accompanies this process. According to video and satellite data, strong explosive events occurred from 00:38 UTC on September 24: volcanic tremor rose up to 0.27 mcm/c; explosions sent ash up to 36,000-37,700 ft (11.0-11.5 km) a.s.l. and big ash cloud in size of 322x128 mi (250x207 km) on a height of 11.5-9 km a.s.l. extended to the north-northeast of the volcano. A thermal anomaly over the lava dome was noting on September 18 and 22-25.

ZHUPANOVSKY VOLCANO (CAVW #300120)
53.59 N, 159.15 E; Elevation 9702 ft (2958 m)
Aviation Color Code is ORANGE

Moderate explosive eruption of the volcano continues. Ash explosions up to 32,800 ft (10 km) a.s.l. could occur at any time. Ongoing activity could affect international and low-flying aircraft.

Moderate explosive eruption of the volcano continues. According to visual data, ash plumes extended to the south-west of the volcano on September 23-24: ash plumes moved to Avachinsky Bay. Satellite data showed: ash clouds and ash plumes rose up to 11,500-13,100 ft (3.5-4.0 km) a.s.l. and extended about 50 mi (80 km) to the south-west and north-east of the volcano on September 23 and 24; a thermal anomaly over the volcano was noting on September 18 and 23-24, the volcano was obscured by clouds in the other days of week.

BEZYMIANNY VOLCANO (CAVW #300250)
55.97 N, 160.6 E; Elevation 9453 ft (2882 m)
Aviation Color Code is YELLOW

Weak activity of the volcano continues. Ongoing activity could affect low-flying aircraft.

A weak seismic activity of the volcano was registering. According to video data, a moderate gas-steam activity of the volcano was observing or it was obscured by clouds last week. Satellite data showed a weak thermal anomaly over the volcano on September 18 and 22-24.

KARYMSKY VOLCANO (CAVW #300130)
54.05 N, 159.44 E; Elevation 4874 ft (1486 m)
Aviation Color Code is YELLOW

Activity of the volcano continues. Ash explosions up to 19,700 ft (6 km) a.s.l. could occur at any time. Ongoing activity could affect low-flying aircraft.

A moderate seismic activity of the volcano was registering. Satellite data showed the volcano was quiet or obscured by clouds all week.

In Russia, KVERT, on behalf of the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (IVS) FED RAS, is responsible for providing information on volcanic activity to international air navigation services for the airspace users.

KVERT scientists was available in the office from 8:30 AM till 6:00 PM (KST) 7 days in week and by phone during the evenings since 2005. KVERT analyses daily satellite imagery (since 2002 till now); information from remote scientific observation stations; real-time seismic data for 11 Kamchatkan volcanoes (data from the Kamchatkan Branch of Geophysical Survey RAS); and other information to monitor activity at Kamchatkan and Northern Kuriles Volcanoes.
